Grande Dixence dam
The Grande Dixence dam is the highest gravity dam in the world, and the most massive in Europe. Located in the Val des Dix in the commune of Hérémence, Valais, it is 285 meters high. It is part of a vast 2,000 MW hydroelectric scheme known as Cleuson Dixence or Grande Dixence, which also includes the Cleuson dam
Build between 1953 and 1961 on the site of a glacial lock, the six-million-cubic-meter concrete dam blcoks the course of the Dixence. Its reservoir, Lac des Dix, is 5km long.
During the summer, it is possible to visit the inside of the dam.

Hiking
There is no better way to recharge your batteries than in the Alps. In this authentic valley, nature reigns supreme, alongside ancient wooden houses blackened by the sun. Summer in the Val d’Hérens takes a thousand paths, on foot, mountain bike or horseback… More than 500 km of trails criss-cross the valley, which is also a Mecca for mountaineering: prestigious huts are the starting point for numerous races. You can follow the “bisses” and relax by lakes and waterfalls.
In this valley with its strong, living traditions, the dark-coated cows of the Hérens breed are temperamental. They are unique in the world, as they naturally battle it out to become queen of the herd.
The Val d’Hérens is also all about conviviality, from bistros to high-mountain refuges, all of which are easily reached by numerous footpaths.
A number of hiking and running tours pass by the Cabane d’Essertze. You can explore the region over 4 days with Nendaz Trekking, which includes 3 nights’ accomodation in cabins.
There is also the well-known Thyon-Dixence race. The 16 km course is set in one of the most beautiful valleys in the Valais Alps. The route follows mountain roads and paths under the majestic gaze of mountains such as the Deant-Blanche and the Matterhorn.

Mountain biking is a fun and sporty way to discover nature and every corner of the region: unspoilt villages and the preservation of traditions and alpine life in a grandiose and magical setting!
The route of the Grand-Raid, the famous mountain bike race that crosses the Val d’Hérens from one side to the other, is signposted and allows you to follow in the footsteps of the racers.
You can also rent electric or traditional mountain bike from the region’s various sport stores.
Here you will find a detailed map of mountain bike routes in the Val d’Hérens.
